Originally, Samuel Leask & Sons department store was going to be one of the key parts of the Capitola Mall. Gottschalks bought Samuel Leask & Sons and took over the stores.

Gottschalks filed for Chapter 11 in January 2009. This became a liquidation in March 2009. In April 2010, Gottschalks announced they would re-open in November 2010 with a store in Clovis and Auburn, California. Since the Capitola store is one of the locations that has not been acquired by another store, rumors have speculated a return to Capitola. No such statement has been made by the company. In 2010 plans were put into place for the Capitola location to become a Target store.

Although founded by Emil Gottschalk, the company name is a plural and not a possessive which is more common.
