Summary Howard King was a photographer and conservationist who helped found the Sempervirens Fund. He was also a volunteer who helped to build and maintain many hiking trails.

Biography Born in Otisco, N.Y., south of Syracuse, in 1906 he died June 29, 2003 of natural causes at his home in Boulder Creek. He started work at Hewlett-Packard in Palo Alto in the 1950's. He got involved with hiking the redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains in 1958. He co-founded the Sempervirens Fund in 1968. Married his wife Maria in 1984.

Achievements The Howard King Trail in Big Basin Redwoods State Park is named in his honor. (Circa 1968.) He helped write and illustrated the book, Plants of Big Basin Redwoods State Park.
