Democrat John Laird was elected as State Assemblymember in 2002, then re-elected in 2004 and 2006, and he served until 2008. He was raised in Valejo, Ca, and graduated from Stevenson College at UCSC in 1972. In 1981 he was elected to the Santa Cruz City Council and served as council member until 1990. He was mayor of Santa Cruz for one year terms in 1983-84 and 1987-88. In 2010 Laird lost a bid to Republican Sam Blakeslee for the State Senate seat vacated by Abel Maldonado in the 15th Senate District, which covers portions of Santa Cruz County, Monterey County, San Luis Obispo County, and Santa Barbara County.
