The Loma Fire started off Loma Prieta Road and Loma Chiquita Road, 10 miles NW of Morgan Hill (near Loma Prieta Mountain) on September 26, 2016. It was at 95% containment on October 7, 2016.

By September 29 at 6 am, the Loma Fire had burned 3,849 acres and was at 22% containment. 1,762 fire personnel were on scene at that time.

The footprint of the majority of the fire was in Santa Clara County, but portions also crept into Santa Cruz County.

The plume of the fire was widely visible from both sides of the hill, including from the cities of Santa Cruz and San Jose.

Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for the Loma Prieta ridgeline area, including all tributary roads along Summit Road from Soquel San Jose Road to Ormsby Fire Station, Uvas Canyon County Park, Loma Chiquita, Casa Loma, and Loma Prieta Way. Portions of Croy Road were also under an evacuation warning.

In October of 2009 there was a wildfire also named the Loma Fire that burned 485 acres near the area of Maymens Flat, Highland Road, Eureka Canyon, and Ormsby.
