The Macy's area of the Capitola Mall was originally a JC Penney's store. When built, it had the first escalator in Santa Cruz County.
Two alarm* fire was called in at 8:26am on November 8, 2011 at the Macy's store. The 30 employees got out without injury. Most of the morning shift would have clocked in between 8:30am to 8:45am. About a dozen fire engines came to help.
