The two giant smoke stacks that can be seen across Monterey Bay from Santa Cruz are at the Moss Landing Power Plant in Moss Landing, a small town that is in Monterey County. The power plant was completed in 1950 by  Pacific Gas & Electric Company. In 1909 it was sold to Duke Power. Ownership has changed several times since then.

Moss Landing was originally called Moss. It changed its name to Moss Landing in 1917. The town is named for Charles Moss.

The town is so close to our county that many have a close relationship to it.  Some work  in Moss Landing and live in Santa Cruz County.

The town is known for antique shops, fishing, and a small craft harbor.
