Fall Creek State Park is host to a wide variety of mushrooms With its wide variety of ecosystems and growing conditions, ranging from beach dunes to redwood duff, the Santa Cruz area also hosts a wide variety of mushrooms. The famed, bright orange Chanterelle is an area favorite for culinary reasons, but don't go out picking orange mushrooms until you have taken some identification classes through the Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz. If you are from another area and you are used to picking edible mushrooms there, absolutely do not pick and eat ANY white colored mushrooms here. There is a variety of Amenita here that is deadly poisonous and looks just like other varieties of mushrooms that are edible from Mexico and Asia. Having said that, you can always enjoy mushrooms from a safe distance at the anual Fungus Fair.
