What do you know about Pacific Pack and Pants? This was a locally owned family business which started in approximately 1976.  They used to have a Summer Madness sale every year with such great deals from their different manufacturers that the line of customers went around the block.  The business started at 113 Walnut Ave. and was so successful that it moved to 125 Walnut Ave. to quadruple their space. ( this is all in downtown Santa Cruz right off Pacific Ave).  They won an award from the city for the huge beautiful circular logo which was painted on the side of the business.  They had the largest selection of day packs in the Monterey and Bay  areas.  They offered an 80% buyback guarantee with no time limit on their day packs and backpacks.  The business was the brainchild of Bill Baskett, a great salesperson and even better guy.  He never met a person he didn’t  like.  He passed away suddenly in 1983; his daughters ran the business thereafter.  It had long time and very loyal employees that made this possible including locals Jake Palazzo, Roy Freels, John Dunahoo, Dave Munoz, Hall Worthington, Richard Pierce, and the great Larry Griffin,  PP&P, as it was known, survived the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989, but running it out of the downtown tents finally took its toll.  Even though Larry Griffin would hop on his ten speed bike and  personally deliver product to customers’ doors when the City of Santa Cruz tore up Pacific Ave. to replace infrastructure, and the  public had to cross the muddy street on wooden planks to get to our door.  It closed its doors for the last time in approximately 1993; the end of an era.
