Salz Tannery was the oldest operating leather tannery West of the Mississippi until it closed in 2001.
In 1973 it was awarded Landmark Status by the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History. It was added to the Santa Cruz Historic Building Survey in 1976.
Currently the 8.3 acre property is being converted to the Tannery Arts Center, where artists can live and work (allegedly at affordable rates), while creating a cultural hub to attract tourists. The first phase of the project was completed in early 2009.

2011-10-12 18:18:35 Another piece of authentic Santa Cruz dies to be replaced by another utopian pipe dream. The citizens of Santa Cruz should never have allowed the University of California to have a site there. It's been downhill ever since for the town. —76.127.124.39
