SF Fed as it was called, had discount coupons for members that were good at local restaurants and a few other places. The spokes-person on their TV commercials was Herb Cane, who wrote a newspaper column in the San Francisco Chronicle. SF Fed would advertise the other branches in the Santa Cruz telephone directory long before they opened their first branch in Santa Cruz. The first branch in the county was in Capitola. The address was originally listed as "Santa Cruz Regional Shopping Center."

In 1982 SF Fed bought the First Federal Savings branch in Watsonville (and some in other counties).

In 1996 SF Fed was bought by First Nationwide Bank, FSB (Federal Savings Bank). First Nationwide Bank later bought California Federal in 1997 and rebranded the branches as Cal Fed. California Federal was later bought by West, National Association in 2002.  West, National kept the name Cal Fed for all branches. Later, Citibank acquired West National in 2002.
