Wachovia Bank established itself in California, in 2007, by buying the branches of World Savings Bank. Based in North Carolina, Wachovia grew to become a nation-wide bank by buying other banks. (Wachovia was the name of the valley where the bank first started.) In 2008 Wachovia was in financial trouble. Citicorp and Wachovia were making plans to keep the Wachovia company operating. Wells Fargo Bank and Wachovia announced on October 3, 2008 an agreement to merge in an all-stock transaction. This nullified the plan with Citicorp.

Since Wells Fargo Bank already had branches in the county, they sold the Santa Cruz Wachovia branch to Bank of the West, closed the 41st Avenue Wachovia branch and closed the Aptos Wachovia branch. The Scotts Valley Wachovia branch became a Wells Fargo Bank.
