Westworld of Scottsdale, now known as just WestWorld, is an event facility that is nationally recognized for its ability to host large and extravagant events for entertainment. The facilities include over 300,000 square feet of event space, 16,000 square feet of hospitality space, 12 acres of turf field and 11 equestrian arenas that stretch across 386 acres. WestWorld includes the TNEC Equidome, TNEC North and South Hall, Monterra, Wendell Arena, the Fields and large parking areas. Due to the large size of the property, WestWorld can host national events such as the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction, Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, International Sportsmen’s Expo and the Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market. WestWorld was also the acclaimed the title of "2020 Facility of the Year" by The League of Agricultural and Equine Centers.

History

Although the name WestWorld was not concrete until 1997, the event facility’s inception started in July of 1982. The Bureau of Reclamation entered an agreement with the City of Scottsdale to acquire the initial 132 acres of property, located at the base of McDowell Mountain, that would later transform into the 386 acres of WestWorld. Its purpose was to “operate the project land for optimum enhancement of general recreation consistent with authorized project purposes.” At the time, the City of Scottsdale was also looking for a new facility to host horse riding events, since Cholla Park was being relocated due to expansion of the Scottsdale Airport. Cholla Park was renamed to Horsemen’s Park in 1986 and included open air arenas, stables, fields, and a flood control basin.

The City of Scottsdale then partnered with K-Lin Corporation to acquire an additional 300 acres of property and K-Lin became the management party responsible for the continued development of the venue. In 1987, the TNEC Equidome was built and in 1988 the Rattler’s Restaurant which is now known as the Monterra catering facility was added. Horsemen’s Park became HorseWorld under K-Lin management in 1988. In 1989, the Barrett-Jackson Auto Show moved to HorseWorld, and it would be the permanent location for the annual show. Finally, in 1990, the event facility we know today was officially named WestWorld of Scottsdale, now referred to as just WestWorld.

From 1990 to 1997, WestWorld faced continued expansions and renovations. K-Lin Corporation sold 50% of interest to HorseWorld Joint Venture, and both companies along with the City of Scottsdale and Bureau of Reclamation created the daily operations of the facility. In 1995, the daily operations grew to include the addition of the Sanctuary Golf Course, Indian Cultural Center, and a modified Polo Field. By 1997, the City of Scottsdale regained operational responsibility of WestWorld, with HorseWorld Joint Venture became the concession operation company. In 1998, the final business plan of WestWorld was approved with the following mission statement: WestWorld of Scottsdale is dedicated to providing public recreational opportunities and a venue for entertainment activities with an emphasis on equestrian and western theme events to citizens and target market visitors; WestWorld will enhance Scottsdale’s image as the West’s Most Western Town; WestWorld will offer equal public access and excellent customer service.”

Facility Use and RV Reservations

Other than hosting national annual events, WestWorld also rents out its facilities and can house 398 RVs in 8 lots around the property. Those interested in staying can take advantage of the provided space, which includes electricity and water for up to 14 days within a 30-day period. There is a dump station on site and is an additional $10 fee. The current rate is $37.63 per night.

The City of Scottsdale must approve all events held at WestWorld. When inquiring, events that are western or equestrian in nature will take precedence, especially if animals are treated properly and they appeal to a wide audience. Events that are non-western or equestrian in their nature must have a broad public appeal and are inline with WestWorld’s philosophies. Facilities must be booked up to one (1) year in advance.

WestWorld does not allow any outside food, liquor, or beverage unless contractually obligated. There is no allowed use of open cooking, campfires, open flame, or space heaters unless approved in writing from the City of Scottsdale. No fireworks or firearms are allowed on WestWorld property. Pets are permitted but must be on a leash at all times. Horse riding on trails and in arenas should be with a minimum of two (2) riders for safety precautions. Horses should also not be turned loose and are ridden at a walking pace inside the stables. Arena lights must be out by 11:00pm unless otherwise stated in the contract. All facility users and RV reservations must sign a Liability Release Agreement. The City of Scottsdale and WestWorld reserve the right to evict anyone from the property for violating any facility rules.
