The Metreon is a retail center that contains restaurants, shops and an IMAX movie theater. It is located adjacent to the Yerba Buena Gardens.

Sony originally built and operated this facility, however they sold it to Westfield in February of 2006. In April 2012 Westfield sold the place to Starwood Capital Group.

Originally, Sony intended the Metreon to be an "urban entertainment destination" that would draw people back to the central city. Two other smaller versions were opened: Sony Mediage in the Aqua City complex in Odaiba, Tokyo, and The Music Box in Berlin's Sony Center.

The cinema at the Metreon was called Sony Theatres, however the parent company Loews Theatres decided that they wanted all of their theaters to be branded under the Loews name. The Sony name was removed and Loews was installed. Eventually, Loews merged into AMC Theatres in 2006.

The Metreon is also the home of a life size replica of Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet and Lost In Space. He resides on the second floor outside the International Spy Shop. (Question: Is it still there now that the spy shop has closed?)

Target also has a store at the Metreon.
