History

The plant construction started January, 1990 and was completed in June, 1994.

The roof of the underground structures is covered with six feet of earth and the landscaping available allows for future expansion of the San Francisco Zoo.

In May of 2008, a tongue-in-cheek attempt to rename the plant the George W. Bush Sewage Treatment Plant was begun by the satirist website, the President Memorial Commission of San Francisco.

As of June 4, 2008, 4,700 out of the necessary 10,000 San Franciscans have added their signatures in order to qualify for a ballot proposition so that SF voters can decide if they want to rename the local Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant.
