Playland-at-the-Beach was an amusement park that operated in various forms from 1884 to 1972 alongside the Great Highway across from Ocean Beach. At it's height, Playland-at-the-Beach covered three city blocks and featured 25 concessions, 4 restaurants, and 14 rides including The Big Dipper roller coaster, Shoot-the-Chutes, a carousel, a funhouse, and a ferris wheel.
For almost forty years it was the only place you could buy an It's-It icecream sandwich.
Various Playland-at-the-Beach attractions can still be experienced:
- Camera Obscura - now at the Cliff House
- The Carousel - now at Yerba Buena Gardens
- Laffing Sal - now at the Musee Mecanique
