The Roxie Theater is the oldest continuously operated cinemas in the United States. The theater has operated under many names, including the Poppy Theater, the Rex Theater, the Gem Theater, and the Gaiety Theater. In 1933, the theater became known as the Roxie Theater and has remained the same until present. The theater has a storied history, playing porn in the 1960s and Russian language movies in the 70s. The Roxie took it's current shape as an independent art house theater in 1976 when community leaders Robert Christopher Evans, Dick Gaikowski, Peter Moore, and Tom Mayer took over operations. The Roxie popcorn serves arguably the best movie theater popcorn in San Francisco, made with organic corn and peanut oil and served with real butter.

In 2003, the Roxie opened a second theater two doors down called The Little Roxie. This smaller theater has 47 seats, industry-standard projection, 5.1 audio, and a small lobby with a concessions stand. Murals by Ezra Eismont & Bunnie Reiss,  Jet Martinez, Kelly Ording, Megan Wilson, Danny Gotimer, and former projectionist Stev Sechovec are painted in the lobby and bathrooms as a part of the 20th Anniversary of the Clarion Alley Mural Project.
