Guardian Scholars Program (GSP)

The Guardian Scholars Program (GSP) is an on-campus program at SFSU for foster youth students that provides additional support that paves the way for their success in academics. GSP was established in 2005 by Xochitl Sanchez and Dr. Sonja Lenz Rashid. This program is also a side branch of SFSU's Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) which is another program that provides support for their students. In this program, each student is given a Case Manager where both individuals work together so that they can make sure that the student is on track to fulfill their academic goals. GSP also develops on and off campus partnership to support students success, equity, and health, including resources for basic needs, parenting students, graduate level education, and community based referrals. GSP also priorities that this program is a free and open space for their students to feel welcomed and apart of supportive community. Within this program, is a leadership group called the GSP Ambassadors where these Ambassadors are students who advocate for their fellow peers as to how to make their program and community a better and safer environment for GSP students. Due to all of the support that over 300 GSP students have been given, the Guardian Scholars Program has helped over 70% of their students graduate and succeed in their academic goals.
