The Little Theatre is a 218-seat theatre on the campus of SF State. It is named the Little Theatre for the 'Little Theatre Movement,' which developed in the early 20th century to champion the idea of theatre as art rather than simply commercial entertainment. The banner of Little Theatre was adopted by those theatre companies that produced the great drama of Eugene O'Neill instead of the melodrama in which his father James O'Neill had starred. This was the movement that spawned the Provincetown Players, the Little Theatre of Chicago, and the Pasadena Playhouse. The SF State Little Theatre was named for those pioneering efforts to establish an American theatre devoted to art, which remains a significant mission of the School of Theatre & Dance to this day. This theatre is mainly used by the School of Theatre & Dance for curricular productions and occasionally as a large lecture classroom. It is equipped with a fly system, video projection systems.
