Helpful Safety Tips

San Francisco public transportation can be hard to get used to if you have never navigated it before. San Francisco State students should practice the following safety precautions if riding the MUNI or BART.

- Look behind you when walking out of a MUNI/BART station to make sure no one is following you.
- Invest in pepper spray. It is legal in California for self-defense purposes only, so this extra safety precaution might make a rider feel safer when entering a BART or Muni station, especially at night. However, carrying an illegal weapon of any kind is prohibited in any BART or SFMTA (Muni) station.

- Keep your head down when approached by someone who appears aggressive or intoxicated and maintain a safe distance from such individuals.

- Never leave personal items unattended.
- Stay in a group if possible, especially when using public transportation late at night
- If someone touches you, or harassment occurs, call the BART or MUNI police immediately (numbers below)
- Use Citizen, a crime watching app in the city, to avoid areas/metro stations with recent activity

- Stay alert during your ride for changes en route or upcoming changes so you can plan accordingly
