The Water Resource Recovery Facility is San Luis Obispo's wastewater treatment plant. (Wastewater includes water from toilets, sinks, showers, manufacturing, laundromats, etc. Rainwater and runoff from the streets are collected in separate stormwater sewers and are released directly into local waterways.) It is run by the City of San Luis Obispo Utilities Department. It costs about $3.2 million per year to operate and employs about twenty people. It treats over 1.7 billion gallons of wastewater each year from within the city limits, Cal Poly, and San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport
