The Revolt
On June 14, 1846, about thirty horsemen rode into Sonoma, arrested General Mariano Vallejo, and took down the Mexican flag. It was immediately replaced by the Bear Flag, proclaiming the independence of the Republic of California from Mexico. On July 9, 1846, the California Republic was annexed into the United States of America.
