City of Neighborhoods is a partnership between Local Life Tacoma and Go Local Tacoma, two nonprofits. The goal of City of Neighborhoods is to catalyze citizen led community development activities throughout Tacoma by connecting local thought leaders that are engaged in a variety of grassroots projects that improve the community. These projects include:

  • Asset Mapping
  • Community Gardens
  • Murals
  • Barter Markets
  • Tree Planting
  • Intersection Repair
  • Pocket Parks
  • Cob Building

The long term goal of City of Neighborhoods is to develop a broad local movement that uses asset based community development (also known as bottom up development) as a tool for establishing vibrant, connected neighborhoods throughout the city that are places where people work, live, and play.

City of Neighborhoods Conference

The City of Neighborhoods Conference was held on June 30, 2012 at the University of Washington-Tacoma. The event featured two keynote speakers: Jim Diers, the former director of Seattle's Department of Neighborhoods, and Milenko Matanovic, Director at the Pomegranate Center. These speakers provided the context for bottom up community development by giving examples of their work throughout the world. The conference also featured 45 local speakers that are doing bottom up community development activities throughout the city.
