ALISON (Advanced Learning Interactive Systems Online) ALISON offers more than 400 courses from basic accounting through web design. All their classes are free. It is used world wide by users trying to learn new skills, and upgrade existing ones. It if part of the offical workforce development wweb site in most states. Workforce uses it to help users in "up-skilling" themselves. The site has developed a "flash test' where a job applicant can dermonstrate to a potential employer that he/she does have skills necessary in a particular fireld. The only financial charge is for a crtificte or diploma verifying the student has taken and passed the course. The cost is $30.00.
Tallahassee Community College is helping baby boomers train for new careers. TCC was selected to join the Plus 50 Encore Completion Program. This is a program nationwide that hopes to train older students. 27 other community colleges are joined with TCC in this effort. TCC offers degrees and certificates that prepare students for careers in healthcare, law enforcement, computer programming, and other growing fields. The goal with this new program is to retrain and return Plus 50 students to the workforce in the shortest time possible. Helping them in pursuing higher degrees is part of the goal. The career-focused programs will assist older students in updating their skills to improve job prospects, giving them the training and knowledge they need to transition into completely new careers.
