LICHGATE

Lichgate is a true treasure, tucked into an area surrounded by apartment complexes, homes, and small businesses. It's great live oak spreads across the property, providing shade,  and beauty to the area. It's a quiet place that encourages visitors to sit, and just watch the world go by.  It's located off High Road, and is land that belonged to Laura Jepsen, a former FSU professor.  When she purchased the land, way back in 1956, it was part of a cow pasture that neighbored low-lying swamplands.  She purchased the property to protect the enormous ancient oak tree.  Ms. Jeppson built a cottage on the land, which is available for tours on Saturdays.  It took her three summers to complete.  She used cedar for the outside walls, and cyress on the inside.  When you visit, you'll note that the floors are made of pine.

When Ms. Jepsen died in late 1995, the property was almost sold for commercial development.  A group of her supporters that included former students and long time friends chipped in for the mortgage to preserve the space forever.  Only one of the original mortgage holders still lives in the area today. A group of dedicated volunteers maintain the place and open it for tours on Saturdays.

To visit and enjoy the beauty of the area, go to 1401 High Road, phone 850-383-6556.  The space is open to the public during daylight hours, with parking being free but rather limited.   www.lichgate.com
