PORCH FEST

Our neighboring community of Quincy, which is filled with historic homes and sites, presents this charming musical festival during the month of September.  It's a replication of long ago times, when there were no electronic items to entertain us, and we, basically, entertained ourselves and our neighbors.  Back in those days, homes had wrap-around porches, which offered shade, places to sit and read, create needlework, chat with others.  At times, the owners and their families spent evenings enjoying and making music.  They'd sing, some hymns, some gospel, some opera, etc.  They'd play instruments, even spoons, or jugs, or flutes.  Many such were made by hand.  Neighbors would come a 'calling when they heard the music, and they'd join in.  And, some people would be out strolling to enjoy an evenings breeze and would stop to listen, and talk.  It was all about enjoying the evening and each others company.  Quincy, today, has regional musicians who are willing to donate their time and talent, and "take over" someones porch to entertain you.  You secure a map showing where the performances are from the local Art Gallery, and you wander at will, listening to those you choose.  This great, fun event starts at 2 pm and continues with the last group of performances beginning at 5 pm.  It's an easy walk, and a fun way to spend an afternoon.  And, to help you think long ago, the Tomato Café, next to the Art Gallery, will even make you a 'Mater sandwich for your lunch!!!!!
