New Town was originally a separate settlement to Hobart, today it is a mainly residential suburb close to the city.
The major shopping centre is Centro New Town, which inclues both a Coles supermarket and a 24 hour K-Mart.
The only two single-sex public schools in Tasmania, Ogilvie High School and New Town High School, are in New Town.
