Bryan Heal Name Bryan Heal

Ward 40 Scarborough Agincourt

Candidate Information

Biography

Bryan is running for municipal office to engage communities in decision making, and to work with council to set fiscal priorities in our budget so that we can invest in the health, transit and infrastructure we need to support Scarborough's population boom.

Born in Toronto, Bryan is the son of Cecil, a civil servant from a Saskatchewan farming family of English & Irish descent; and Esther, a teacher who came to Canada in search of educational opportunities not then present in her native Trinidad. Together, they moved to Toronto and had Bryan and his sister Jen, who were raised in a large and loving family complete with multiple religions and cultures.

In 2003, Bryan earned his B.Sc. (Hons) from McMaster University and has since undertaken post graduate training in Public Health from Lakehead University, the Wellesley Institute for Urban Health, and the Public Health Agency of Canada. With an understanding of how a social determinants of health approach to public policy can help strengthen communities and grow economies, he has co-authored several articles and continues to work and volunteer on these and other issues. Professionally, Bryan has worked overseas with the International Centre for Migration and Health where he documented the impact of the Tsunami and its economic crises on displaced people in Southeast Asia. He has spent the past three years as a program and service Evaluator at YouthLink, and elsewhere in the non profit sector as a strategic planning and research consultant.

The life, academic, and professional values that Bryan brings to this campaign are rooted in a belief that no matter where or how we choose to live our lives, none of us exist in isolation from one another; that the issues which appear to affect only some of us, can have a profound impact on all of us in many ways. If elected, one of his first priorities as councillor would be to improve the accessibility and customer service efforts of the office, so that it is easier for all stakeholders in Ward 40 to be supported in their engagement around any issue working its way through Scarborough Community Council or City Hall.

Bryan lives in the ward in the Birchmount & Ellesmere area.
