Portrait of Sammy Yatim - Held during Protest in front of Police Headquarters, August 13 2013.Sammy Yatim was an 18-year-old from Aleppo, Syria.

His parent divorced, his mom stayed in Syria, his dad moved to Canada and Sammy lived with him. His 17 year old sister recently joined him in Toronto, due to safety concerns from the Civil War currently in Syria.

He was shot a total of nine times and killed by a Police Officer in the early hours of Saturday, July 27, 2013, on a westbound 505 Dundas streetcar at Dundas Street West and Bellwoods Avenue, while holding a knife.

After being shot, he was then tasered.

At St. Michael's Hospital, he was pronounced dead. His parents being out of town at that moment, it was left to Sammy's 17 year old sister to positively ID the body.

Public Outrage, Demonstrations, Investigations, and public debate about police shootings have followed.

A makeshift memorial at the north-west corner of Dundas Street West at Bellwoods Avenue remains there, though it's been looking worse for wear of late.
