History of the TCDS

A Trinity College Dramatic Club was first formed in 1892 at the University of Trinity College, apparently under the auspices of Lally McCarthy who also graduated that year.

The Dramatic Club produced plays in Toronto and toured Guelph, Woodstock, Brantford, and Hamiltron in 1894, which caused the club to bankrupt itself later that year.

Little is known about theatre-related activities at the University of Trinity College (later Trinity College, University of Toronto) during the years between the insolvency of the dramatic club in 1894 and the emergence of the Dramatic Society, although it is doubtful that theatrical productions ceased entirely.

The Dramatic Society produced Two Modern English Plays as early as 1919, but its Annual Productions did not begin until 1921. It was in that year that the Dramatic Society was first able to use Hart House as a performance venue.

Since 1927, the Dramatic Society has usually produced at least one full-length production a year. In some years and additional two or three short plays have been produced as well.

The main role of the Dramatic Society has been to support and run productions at the college and it has also been responsible for Trinity’s involvement in the University of Toronto Drama Festival.

Currently, the primary venue for the Trinity College Dramatic Society’s productions is the George Ignatieff Theatre in the Trinity College campus.

TCDS plays have also been staged in Cartwright Hall in St. Hilda’s, the Trinity quadrangle, Seeley Hall. The Trinity College Chapel has also been used in the past for Christmas plays and productions of T.S. Eliot’s Murder in the Cathedral.
