As of Monday August 26 2013, Toronto City Council declared the Councillor seat in Ward 3 Etobicoke Centre vacant at a Special City Council Meeting called by Mayor Rob Ford.

By a vote of 22 to 11, City Council opted to use an Appointment process rather than a By-Election to fill in the vacancy.

The Vacancy was created after Former Deputy Mayor and Ward 3 Councillor Doug Holyday was successfully elected as an MPP in a recent Provincial By-Election.

Who Can Seek the Appointment?

  • a Canadian citizen
  • at least 18 years of age
  • a resident of the City of Toronto, or own or rent property in the City of Toronto (or the spouse of the owner or renter)
  • not legally prohibited from voting, or from holding municipal office

September 25 2013 - Information Session

More than 50 people attended the Information Session inside the Council Chamber at the Etobicoke Civic Centre to learn what it takes to be a fill-in City Councillor for this vacant seat. There was a 12 minute presentation by City Staff followed by Q&A by people present.

Many of the questions were of a sincere nature by people who just didn't know how the City Council works nor what the duties of a Councillor in fact are.

Then there was the Guy who wants his dog, YES HIS PET DOG to be a candidate-nominee for the job.

His dog wasn't allowed inside the building, never mind the meeting itself.

He even printed up campaign business cards for this potential Canine Councillor:

Business Card for the Dog who would be Councillor...!...?????

Eventually the owner of the dog relented and attended the info session minus his pooch who presumably remained outside.

He kept saying the Mike Bullard, the radio host, told him his dog could run...

Well, if Bullard told him, then it must be true, eh?

More importantly, attending the meeting was the only way they could pick up the paperwork, two sheets really, they needed to fill out and submit by the Thursday at Noon deadline.

What's that? YOU Wanted to be considered as a Etobicoke Centre Council Candidate but couldn't make the meeting?

Don't worry, here's are two images that you could theoretically blow up to 8 1/2" by 11", print out, fill in, and submit:

Consent of NomineeDeclaration of Qualifications

You'll need to bring I.D. with you to the City Clerk's office on the 2nd Floor of City Hall, and here's what's acceptable:

Acceptable Identification

Deadline is Today, Thursday September 26 2013 at Noon. Paperwork, as seen above, needs to be filled in and submitted to the City Clerk's office on the second floor of City Hall, as the regular elections office on the main floor is currently being renovated, so don't go there!!! You may miss your date with electoral destiny.
