History:

According to historian David Leighton, the idea of building Tucson Mall was entirely a coincidence. In 1930, Helen Wetmore was on a trip to Chicago when she was inspired by a shopping center on Skokie Highway. She thought, "I'm going to have that on my land". Her husband's family owned the plot of land, and she kept it aside until plans for the mall began in 1978; with the assistance of Forest City Enterprises.

Upon opening in 1982, the Tucson Mall included 100 stores; with anchor stores Broadway (now a Macy's), JCPenney, Mervyn's (now occupied by a Forever 21), Diamond's (sold to Dillards in 1984), and Sears (closed as of 2020)

1987, the mall was used as a location for the film Can't Buy Me Love

In 1990, Tucson Mall began a large-scale expansion plan. The Dillard's anchor was the first part to be expanded and renovated, and a parking garage was built next to it. On the east side of the mall, a new wing was built for providing more commercial services and attracting companies to join. This new wing opened in 1991, and provided more than 400,000 square feet of space as well as more than 70 new stores, including new anchor store Foleys  (later becoming a Robinsons-May, who then was bought by Macy's in 2006).

In 1993 exterior shots of the mall were used in the movie Bodies, Rest, & Motion. Meanwhile inside the mall, a new corridor called Arizona Avenue was added as well as a carousel.

In the fall of 1999, the mall acquired its newest anchor store- Old Navy

By 2001, the mall boasted 200 stores and 6 department stores. Around this time, the mall was purchased by General Growth Properties.

In the years 2002-2003 the then 21 year old Mall underwent its first renovation which included new floors and tiles, a new paint job, soft seats, escalators and an elevator, a children's play area, and an updated "mercado"feeling to Arizona Avenue.

In 2007, the mall saw another set of construction as Macy's relocated to the form Robinsons-May store, and the old Macy's location was demolished to provide a new entrance and security offices.

In 2009 as Mervyn's shut down, Forever 21 took over its 2-story location.

In April of 2020, Sears closed permanently.
