An outgrowth of the Demonstration Cities and Metropolitan Development Act of 1966, Tulsa's Model Cities began in January, 1968, and was coordinated by the University of Oklahoma. The first year was spent planning objectives. In August, 1969, a contract was signed with the City of Tulsa and Department of Urban Housing and Urban Development giving the City full responsibility for administration and monitoring of the program. The program established three concentrated areas of planning: Economic, Social/Community Services, and Physical.
