The Twin Cities are home to 12 food co-ops (short for "cooperatives") in 14 locations -- the highest rate of food co-ops per capita in the United States.

Food co-ops encourage communication and cooperation between customers and suppliers / growers. They tend to focus on selling organic and locally produced food and goods. While co-op membership is open and available to anyone who wishes to join, it is not necessary to be a member to shop at any of the Twin Cities food co-ops.
