The Northstar Line is a commuter rail line that runs from Downtown Minneapolis to Big Lake, MN, approximately 40 miles Northwest of Minneapolis. The line began service on November 16, 2009 after more than a decade of planning. There are plans to extend the rail line to St. Cloud.
Seven stations are in operation serving an average daily ridership of 2,400, as of Q4 2012. Ridership numbers are lower than projected - which has delayed line extensions. On average the train operates at 47mph; however, legally it can travel up to 79mph.
