The Minneapolis VA Medical Center is a Clinical Referral Level I facility. The VA works with the U of M plus other schools for allied health programs. The VA opened the Spinal Cord Injury Center in January 2009. The center has 2 ICU's, a stepdown unit, 2 post-surgical wards, 2 medicine wards, a polytrauma center, the spinal cord injury unit, transitional car for traumatic head injuries, a hospice center, 2 community living centers, and about 100 primary, specialty and community based clinics. Overall, there are approximately 220 acute inpatient beds, 80 subacute beds, and 30 SCI beds. The nursing staff alone is about 1000.
