George Rodson Cawthra was born June 19, 1895 in Burks Falls, the son of Francis ‘Frank’ Cawthra and Mary Elizabeth Goulding.

At the time of the 1901 and 1911 census, the family lived in Ryerson Township – specifically identified as being on Lot 7 Concession 8.

George enlisted March 24, 1916 in Burks Falls.

At the time of enlistment George indicated that he lived in Burks Falls and that he was a farmer.

George married Jean Margaret Crozier on August 16, 1922 in Haliburton.

George died May 16, 1981 in Burks Falls.

In his Discharge Certificate, George was identified as enlisting in the 162nd in Burks Falls on March 11, 1916.

He was identified as having served with the 4th Battalion, Canadian Engineers in France.

He was discharged May 29, 1919.

George arrived in England on November 11, 1916 on the S.S. Caronia.

In December he transferred to the 2nd Pioneers in the Field.

In June/July of 1918 he transferred to the 4th Battalion Canadian Engineers.

He returned to Canada in May of 1919.

Of note, George was reported wounded, but remained at his post on August 28, 1917.
