Known officially among meterologists as the Windsor-Tecumseh Tornado of 1946, one of Downriver's rare direct tornado hits occurred on June 17, 1946, and it would affect downtown River Rouge directly. The majority of the damage by the F4 tornado was done in Windsor, but the first touchdown was in River Rouge.
