Melvindale (population 10,715) is a small city in northeastern Downriver. It is bordered by the Rouge River, a Canadian National track, just south of Outer Drive, Interstate 75 and Schaefer Highway. Major thoroughfares include Dix Highway, Allen Road, Oakwood Boulevard and Greenfield Road.
It was incorporated as a city in 1933. The city is named after Melvin Wilkinson, developer of one of the city's first neighborhoods.
