Hinsdale is an unincorporated locality in Sutter County. It is located near the east bank of the Sacramento River, south of Tisdale and the Tisdale Bypass, west of the Sutter Bypass, northwest of Everglade, north of Kirkville, and northeast of Cranmore. Its elevation is 33 feet.

The native plant community of Hinsdale is valley grassland. This means that winter flooding, extremely dry summers, and soil that tends to be somewhat alkaline make it difficult for trees and shrubs to grow. However, grasses or grasslike plants are not necessarily the dominant plants either. Many types of herbaceous plants thrive in valley grassland.

Hinsdale is split between the 95676 and 95957 zip codes. The U.S. Postal Service sometimes lists addresses in Hinsdale as being in Robbins or Meridian, because Robbins is partly in the 95676 zip code and Meridian is in the 95957 zip code. However, on the Yuba-Sutter Wiki, we prefer listing the more specific location Hinsdale.

History

A California Division of Highways map from 1932 shows that Hinsdale was at that time called Sheffield. By 1952, it was being recrded on maps as Hinsdale.1
