John Sampson was a gold miner who arrived in Marysville from Chile, along with José Manuel Ramirez. Together they purchased part of Theodor Cordua's ranch here from Charles Julian Covillaud in 1849. Sampson Street in Marysville is named for him.

John Sampson was born in Leven, East Riding, Yorkshire, on October 21, 1819. He died in Marysville on September 22, 1850.
