Presbyterianism is is a method of church governance typified by the rule of assemblies of presbyters, or elders. The largest Presbyterian denomination in the United States, and the only one with churches in the Yuba-Sutter area, is the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is a mainline denomination. It has ordained heterosexual women as elders since 1930 and as ministers since 1956. It has ordained openly gay men and lesbians as elders, deacons, and ministers since 2011. It performs same-sex union ceremonies but not same-sex marriages. In 2005, one minister in Pennsylvania did perform a lesbian marriage; she is being tried for it in the church court.
The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) maintains full communion with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
