Tierra Buena is a census-designated place in Sutter County. It is located south of Nuestro, southwest of Berg, northwest of Yuba City and South Yuba City, east of Alemandra, and southeast of the Sutter Buttes. It is bounded approximately on the north and south by Pease Road and Highway 20 and on the east and west by Elmer Avenue and North Township Road.

It has a population of 4,587 (as of the 2000 census) and a total area of 3.43 square miles. Its elevation is 55 feet. The average annual rainfall is 18.1 inches. The average high temperature in July is 96.3°, and the average low temperature in January is 38.0°. Its name means "Good Earth" in Spanish.

The native plant community of Tierra Buena is central oak woodland.

The U.S. Postal Service sometimes lists addresses in Tierra Buena as being in Yuba City, because Tierra Buena is in the 95993 zip code and Yuba City is partly in it as well. However, on the Yuba-Sutter Wiki, we prefer listing the more specific location Tierra Buena.

Demographics

As of a July 2007 estimate1, residents' median age was 39 years.

71.8% of residents were white and non-Hispanic, followed by 10.6% of residents who were Hispanic and 7.8% who were Asian Indian (predominantly Punjabi).

Of residents 25 or older, 81.5% had at least a high school degree, 18.6% had at least a bachelor's degree, and 3.8% had a graduate or professional degree.

Of residents 15 or older, 67.1% were married, 18.8% had never married, 8.6% were divorced, 4.5% were widowed, and 1.0% were separated.

4.6% of households were headed by unmarried partners. 0.5% of households were headed by self-identified same-sex couples.

For employed residents, the average travel time to work was 24 minutes. The most common industries for males to work in were the construction industry (14%) and public administration (11%). The most common industries for females to work in were education (29%) and health care (11%). Sutter has an unusually high proportion of education workers, compared to the rest of the Yuba-Sutter area.

The 2007 median annual household income was $70,104 (the second-highest in the Yuba-Sutter area, after South Yuba City) and 2008 median home price was $251,230. 7.2% of residents were below the poverty level in 2007, and 3.2% were below half the poverty level. The 2008 cost of living index was 90.4 (the United States average is 100).
