Walter William Herger Jr. (1945- ) has represented California's 2nd Congressional District as a Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1987. He was born in Yuba City and raised on his family's 200-acre cattle ranch and plum farm in Rio Oso. He also inherited his family's oil and gas exploration business, Herger Propane Gas. He graduated from American River College with an Associate of Arts and attended California State University Sacramento for a year, without graduating. Herger is a Mormon and is married to his second wife, Pamela Sargent, with whom he has 9 children and 6 grandchildren.
Herger's political career began with his election in 1976 to the East Nicolaus School Board, where he served until 1980. From 1980 to 1986, he served in the California State Assembly. He now sits on the United States House Committee on Ways and Means and on the Subcommittees on Health and Trade, as well as the Joint Committee on Taxation.
According to OpenSecrets.org, the top 5 contributors to Herger's 2009-2010 Campaign Committee are AT&T Inc., the National Association of Health Underwriters, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance, and the National Beer Wholesalers Association.
In August 2009, Herger was criticized for responding to a constituent who described himself as a "proud right-wing terrorist" at a town hall meeting in Redding by saying, "Amen, God bless you" and calling the man "a great American."
