Highway 20 is a state highway that runs between Highway 1 on the Pacific coast at Fort Bragg in Mendocino County and Interstate 80 just north of Emigrant Gap in Placer County. From west to east in the Yuba-Sutter area, it passes through Meridian, Lira, Tarke, Sutter, Yuba City, Marysville, Hallwood, Browns Valley, Sicard Flat, Timbuctoo, and Smartsville. It is also often used for traveling to Clear Lake in Lake County and Grass Valley in Nevada County.

In the Yuba-Sutter area, Highway 20 is also called Halsey Avenue in Alemandra, Colusa Avenue or Colusa Highway in Yuba City, and Browns Valley Road in Browns Valley. In Marysville, it overlaps parts of 10th Street (including the 10th Street Bridge into Yuba City), E Street, 9th Street, B Street, 12th Street and East 12th Street, and Levee Road. On 9th Street and B Street in Marysville, it also overlaps with Highway 70.

As of 23 May 2020, major road construction continues along Highway 20 in the Smartsville and Timbuctoo area. The project includes widening road shoulders and straightening curves and slopes.

From east to west, significant places on Highway 20 include Timbuctoo Bridge, Browns Valley Towing and Storage, Cordua Elementary School, Country Market, the 10th Street Bridge, DC Granite, Dowers Tavern, Downtown Grill, El Cantarito, Stromer Realty, Teriyaki House, Blue Pantry Donuts, Yuba-Sutter Mall, La Mexicana, Taquería Valle, Las Palmas Fine Mexican Food, Kenzo Sushi, and Jeff's Paint Center.
