FORT LEE, Va. – The Defense Commissary Agency will accept outstanding CertifiCheck gift certificates from authorized customers thanks to a plan approved today by the Department of Defense. The approved plan allows DeCA commissaries to honor CertifiCheck gift checks now through July 31, 2009.

For the past dozen or so years, the system has worked just fine, said Jesse Bernstein, the Ann Arbor Area Chamber of Commerce, which issued the certificates. The Ann Arbor Gold program had more than $2 million in sales, said Bernstein, chamber's president and CEO.

Ann Arbor Gold, a program of the Ann Arbor Area Chamber of Commerce used to encourage shopping at local merchants, has shut down. The company that administers the program, CertifiChecks, is filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Dayton, Ohio, according to an announcement on the firm’s website.
