Chico State is organized into seven colleges. These colleges are further subdivided into departments, centers and institutes, programs and other offices.

Generally, each department has a chair, who is elected by and from among the faculty of the department. The chair reports to the dean of the college of which the department is a member.

Departments formuate the curriculum of the classes in their academic area. Departments generally correspond to a major in that field of study, which is a program of required classes to achieve a degree in that field of study. As of 2008, the university had 154 majors and 53 graduate programs.
