The Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge is part of the wider Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex which includes the Sacramento River National Wildlife Refuge, Llano Seco Ranch, and the Delevan National Wildlife Refuge. Popular birding months are from late October through February — perhaps into later months as well (someone needs to let us know). There is an autotour route with a radio guide on 93.1 FM — you'll hear the history of the refuge and be given hints on identifying waterfowl. While you're not allowed to get out of the vehicle while driving on the autotour, midway there is parking and a large stand with free scopes for convenient bird watching. In addition, bathrooms are located in the same general area. The road is gravel and the speed limit is 20mph in most areas.

Relaxing footpaths are available near the complex for those that prefer not to drive. But keep in mind, cars are a rather convenient and mobile bird blind.

The Sacramento refuge is also home to mountain lions, deer, and many small critters.

Bird Sightings

If you have been to this refuge, please list what birds you've seen. It's best to not abbreviate them here as you would while bird watching (yes, it's super convenient but laypeople might get really confused).

  • American Kook
  • Canadian Snow Geese
  • Great Blue Heron
  • Egret

Directions

To get to the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge from Chico, travel to Willows by taking Chico River Road (which will turn into River Road) and turning right at Ord Ferry Road. Travel until you hit SR-45 and make a left. Soon you'll reach SR-162, make a right. Drive into Willows and right after the railroad tracks make a left on S.Tehama Street. As you travel you'll eventually see signs and the refuge will be on your left.
