Food Surplus Program |
The Susan Freiburg Memorial Food Surplus Program helps alleviate hunger in the community by connecting those who have surplus food and disposable products such as plates and napkins with those who serve the hungry. Prepared food donated by restaurants and food service programs and food donated by grocery stores is placed at local shelters. Food is not distributed to individuals directly.
Eligibility: Shelters receive priority in placing food; other programs in need such as Boys and Girls Clubs are also eligible

Thanksgiving Dinner - Urbana High School |
Thanksgiving dinner is served on Thanksgiving from 5pm to 7pm. on dates determined each year. The annual feast is served at no charge to seniors, international students, homeless persons and those who would otherwise be alone on Thanksgiving. The MTD is providing two busses to give rides to anyone who is unable to drive to the dinner at the High School. (Busses do not normally run on Thanksgiving day.) To make reservations or if you are in need of transportation, call 384-1100. You do not need a reservation to attend, but it is helpful to the Student Senate if you call and let them know how many people are coming. The program will include numerous prizes and specially written Turkey carols.

The Transitional Housing Program provides housing and support services to selected families who have been residents of a homeless shelter or who are otherwise homeless. Families live in scattered site house for up to two years while working toward goals that will help them become more self-sufficient, so they can provide their own housing.

TIMES Center
shelter and Food for Homeless Men over age 18 |
TIMES (Transitional Initiatives and Men's Empowerment Services) Center includes two transitional programs for homeless men, 18 years and older; one barrack-style that houses 50 men and one semi-private program that houses 20 men. The goal is to transition men to independent living. TIMES Center also runs a soup kitchen where residents of the programs receive three meals a day, and the lunch and evening meals are additionally open to anyone in need

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)/Weatherization

The COMMUNITY ACTIONPROGRM provides grants and loans for housing rehabilitation in rural areas of Champaign County. It also provides housing counseling to low-income households. Depending on availability of funds, RPC helps homeless or near homeless persons with first month rental payments and may help with past due rent. It provides information, referral and advocacy for low-income families and seniors, training for family daycare providers, and a career mentoring program for middle and high school students. Post-secondary education scholarships for qualified low-income students are available. RPC administers the Champaign County HEAD START PROGRAM, LIHEAP and the Weatherization Programs.

Cunningham Township General Assistance |
Cunningham Township provides General Assistance funds for those who live within the city limits of Urbana, IL. General Assistance is a category of public aid to serve those persons who are not eligible for other state/federal assistance, like TANF or SSI. No "emergency assistance" is available. The maximum grant level for adult cases is $245 per month. A client may be eligible for General Assistance if gross monthly unearned income does not exceed $245 and gross monthly income from working does not exceed $654.

Volunteer Services Program |
Volunteer Services is a community-based program that coordinates volunteer services for activities that prevent or reduce delinquency or other social problems in youth. Volunteers-in-the-Schools provides individual or group tutoring. The Partners Program provides one-to-one friendship and role modeling to youths who can benefit from the attention of a caring volunteer. Volunteers also serve at Roundhouse, a temporary crisis shelter for homeless and runaway youth. The Teen Parent Tutoring Program provides tutors and mentors for pregnant or parenting teen moms and dads to help them obtain high school diploma or GED.
