Wild Boars (Sus scrofa) are an invasive, non-native species brought here from Eurasia and Africa. Wild boars do not currently live in Davis itself. However, per the California Department of Fish and Game range maps, they live in the Yolo County foothills and in the Dunnigan Hills.
Wild boars were first brought to California in 1924. They have mostly been spread by wealthy landowners for sport hunting purposes. The problems they cause include destroying agricultural crops and native vegetation and wetlands, killing wildlife and livestock, and being violent toward humans and pets. They also damage water quality and serve as vectors of many diseases that can infect humans. including brucellosis, trichinosis and pseudorabies.
