As a center for the Tuberculosis cure, Saranac Lake had to take sanitation very seriously.
In the 1902 Saranac Lake Village Directory, C. F. Tousley advertised his services as "Proprietor of Steam and Formaldehyde Process of Beating and Disinfecting Carpets and Rugs. Rooms Disinfected According to Law Laid down by the Board of Health, Saranac Lake, N.Y." Also, "All Kinds of Bicycles and Bicycle Sundries. Domestic Sewing Machines For Sale and Rent. Terms Cash, 'I Need It.' Telephone."
